Wellington eighth grade boys, seventh grade girls win Pioneer League Tourney titles

first_imgWellington seventh grade girls – Pioneer League Tournament Champions.By Tracy McCue and James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Two Wellington teams have secured Pioneer League Tournament Championship trophies. The eighth grade boys team beat Mulvane 54-18 Monday in Arkansas City to claim the crown. Earlier in the day in Winfield, Wellington seventh grade girls clinched the Pioneer League crown and completed an undefeated season with a 40-13 victory over El Dorado. Eighth grade boysWellington led 11-7 after one quarter, and switched to a full court press to start the second quarter and that made the difference. The Knights went on a 8-0 run in the first minute of the quarter, and scored 21 unanswered points before halftime. Mulvane got a field goal with a few second left in the half, and Wellington led 34-9 at the half.The Knights got up by 30 late in the third quarter, and the clock ran continuously from that point. Mulvane managed a 6-0 run in the third, but never got closer than 26.Silas Popplewell scored 23 for Wellington, and had 15 at the half. Blake Rausch scored 14 after getting 10 in the first half. Other scorers for Wellington were Tyler Brown with 6, Zane Cornejo with 4, Gage Cunningham had 3, Zander Vargas 2 and Malachi Macias 2.Silas Popplewell led all scorers in Wellington eighth grade win.Seventh grade girlsThis like all other games for the Wellington seventh grade girls got ugly early.The seventh grade Knights were never challenged all season grabbing an 11-0 lead and coasting to victory.Scoring for Wellington were: Lexi Clift 2, Rylee Rusk 18, Erin Roths 2, Myriland French 4, Mykiland French 2, Katrina Dvorak 2, and Allison Buresh 10.Follow us on Twitter.
